The Development of Sustainable Enterprises Essay - 1876 Words

Peace and political stability are key conditions for the creation and development of sustainable enterprises. A constitutional monarchy shaped on the British model, Lesotho is a relatively stable country with a short history of successful, if at times contested, democratic transfers of power. According to the Global Peace Index (IEP), in 2013, Lesotho ranked 49 out of 162 countries . Lesotho gained its independence from Britain in 1966. There followed distinct political periods, characterized, in turn, by multiparty democracy (1966-1970), one-party state (1970-1986), military dictatorship (1986-1993) and the return of multiparty democracy (1993). The last competitive elections were held in May 2012 and involved 18 parties. On a scale from - 2.5 to 2.5 whe re higher values reflect better performance, Lesotho slightly improved from -0.05 in 2006 to 0.11 in 2012. Of its three neighbouring countries used for comparison, Botswana and Namibia are consistently placed above Lesotho, and South Africa has slumped to the last place since 2010. The â€Å"Corruption Perceptions Index† (CPI) confirms that Lesotho has recovered from a dramatic situation, particularly since 2011. On a scale from 0 (â€Å"highly corrupt†) to 10 (â€Å"highly clean†), Lesotho has risen from 3.2 in 2006 to 4.9 in 2013. There are a number of factors which explain this improvement, such as the ratification, in 2006 of the African Union Convention on Combating Corruption . The political commitment to combating this issue was further reflected in the establishment of committees dealing with cases of corruption and by launching investigations on corruption cases . Thus, in June 2012, the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Offences (DCEO) – th e government’s anticorruption watchdog created in 2001 – was made an autonomous body with full control over its budget , but effects are still expected.
